Whether you are thinking of just making an informed mating to produce a quality litter, whether you are contemplating on making breeding good dogs your hobby or whether you would like to learn the basics regarding what goes into breeding a litter, this DVD is a good place to start. It is not possible in one DVD to tell you everything you need to know, but this particular DVD can give you some tips on what you should look out for.
It has very basic information in terms one can easily understand and is divided into 3 parts. The first part is divided into two sections: 1. Simple Genetics and 2. The Pedigree and Breeding Definitions. The first section, Simple Genetics is indeed SIMPLE. Using two different colored dogs, the author gives examples of the certainties, probabilities and possibilities of resulting litters. The second section, Pedigree and Breeding Definitions, helps in understanding what one looks to learn from reading a dog’s pedigree and helps understand what in breeding, line breeding and out breeding are as well as their advantages and disadvantages.
The second part deals with Practical Dog Breeding and is divided into three sections: 1. The bitch’s season, 2. The dog’s reproductive anatomy and 3. The actual mating. There are no difficult scientific terms used, no mind-boggling terminologies. Simple and practical. The author narrates while using as an example live dogs. In section one, she shows you a bitch who is nearing her season and explains the signs to look for. Step by step she takes you when the bitch has reached the days where she is ready to mate. In Section 2, the author explains the dog’s reproductive anatomy in very simple terms – again, no difficult terminology is used. In Section 3, she takes you step by step through the actual mating itself.
The third and final part is The Young Showdog where here it is separated into 2 sections: 1. Selection of the puppy from a litter and 2. Education of a very young puppy. In Section 1, Ms Harvey gives a very good explanation of what to look for when selecting a show puppy. Of course, it cannot be as detailed and meticulous as in DVD’s and books which deal ONLY with that subject, but I find that it is very good for a beginner. Section 2 deals with the importance of socializing a puppy so that it develops a stable and sound character.
All in all, I was very pleased with this DVD. The narration was simple and the speech was slow, clear and very easy to follow. I find it an excellent DVD that one can enjoy watching while learning the absolute basics. Personally, I would of course also use other reference DVD’s and books on the subject but I find that it is a wonderful DVD from which to start from.
